Could the Rangers actually be looking for suitors to sell some of their players? Per Evan Grant, the more people he speaks to from the Rangers, the more he got the sense that the Rangers are looking to pick up minor league pitching (prospects).
This means the Rangers would be parting with major league roster assets in return. This sounds a little absurd to be thinking of this now. Possibly the FO is positioning themselves for the inevitable fire sale by Aug 1st trade deadline and will re-open talks when the time comes? Otherwise, the major league roster asset would have to be a player that is either A). Not an integral piece to success for 2017 or B). means we are close to signing a replacement for this asset through the free agent market. I don’t fault the attempt to restock the farm, but I have to assume at this point A or B is taken into account.
If the Rangers are in a position to lose the AL West and/or the AL wild card, you can almost guarantee that Yu Darvish, Jonathon Lucroy, Cole Hamels, Andrew Cashner, A.J. Griffin, Tanner Scheppers & Jake Diekman will be shopped at and prior to the non-waiver trade deadline.
